Passport or voter ID card is required for air entry (Passport preferred). Voter ID is valid for usage in the land entry.

Passport-size photos – 2 copies.

Proof of hotel booking – immigration will request.

Plans for the tour – This isn’t always necessary but can make things a lot quicker.

Obtaining the Permit Step-by-Step

Step 1: Entry to Bhutan. You can avail by road (via Phuentsholing, Gelephu or Samdrup Jongkhar) or via air at Paro International Airport.

Step 2: Step at The Immigration Office. It is  at Phuentsholing, it is close to Bhutan Gate. Open on weekdays from 9am to 5pm.

Step 3: Complete the Bhutan permit form. It’s easily done and only a one page form. You can get help from your tour operator right on the spot.

Step 4: Now hand over the papers to the authority. The process can take up to 2 hours. But you will get it on the same day. You need not pay anything.

Step 5: Carry your Bhutan Travel Pass. Be careful to keep it safe. You need to show it at all checkpoints.

Entry Points to Bhutan

Official crossings into Bhutan from India are through these:

Phuentsholing – The most-favoured land entry. Linking Jaigaon with West Bengal. Conveniently located near the Bagdogra Airport and NJP Railway Station.

Paro – Entry to the airport, Paro. Issued on arrival at the airport by the immigration authorities.
